Fernando de Bulhoes was born in 1195 in Portugal. He became a Catholic priest and was famous for his engaging preaching. A famous quote from his preaching, "Actions speak louder than words; let your words teach and your actions speak". If you have ever said this, did you know you were quoting Fernando, today known as St. Anthony?
He joined a Franciscan Monastery in Cumbria, Portugal. He traveled around Portugal, Italy, Spain, and France preaching the Gospel. Fabled to have engaged the attention of a school of fish, he preached to the gathering fish and the townspeople became fascinated seeing the fish responding and schooling near him, they heard his message some converted to Christianity. He died traveling to Italy. He is celebrated today all over the world on June 13, St. Anthony Day. He is represented by many symbols including lily flowers for his purity of heart, the baby Jesus for his devotion, and sardines for his fabled preaching. He is known as the patron saint of seeker of lost or stolen things and the poor reflecting his life of devotion and service to Christ Jesus.
